Tracey Lee's ‘The Power and the Potential of the Overseas Vote’ Op Ed in The Spinoff (27 Sept, 2023)

About —

Authorised by Every Kiwi Vote Counts, 11H Joan St, Pt Chevalier, AKL, 1022

Every Kiwi Vote Counts is a nonpartisan initiative to encourage overseas voter participation, believing democracy only works if we are all part of it.

It is championed by Tracey Lee, a brand strategist, sociologist and boomerang kiwi who has spent 15 years voting overseas (back when she had to head to the consulate in NY; voting via fax in Shanghai; and at last online from Amsterdam).

Special thanks to Arvid Eriksson, our director.

Deep appreciation to our donors, who contributed to this campaign based on the intent and trusted in the output.

And to Kea for sharing the campaign through their global network.

Footnotes —

1 In New Zealand, an estimated 3,871,418 or 75% of the total population is eligible to vote - Electoral Commission. Applying that to the estimated population of 670,000 New Zealanders living in Australia puts their eligible voter population at 502,500.

2 Thirty-eight of the sixty-five general electorates have an estimated eligible population between 51,011 - 60,559, with an average electorate size in New Zealand of 59,560 - Electoral Commission, which puts 502,500 eligible New Zealand voters in Australia voters at approximately ‘8X most electorates’.

3 There are estimates of up to one million New Zealanders living overseas - Stats NZ and around 670,000 New Zealand Citizens living in Australia - DFAT

4 The 1 News/ Verian Poll, Sept 13, had both ACT and GREEN party polling with 10% of the voters in the General Election. The 502,500 estimated eligible New Zealand voters living in Australia would put them at 13% of total New Zealand eligible voters and 750,000 overseas voters is 20% of New Zealand’s total eligible voter population.

5 There were 62,787 overseas votes in the 2020 General Election - Election Commission. One Million overseas New Zealanders could represent up to 750,000 overseas votes, hence only 8% of eligible overseas New Zealanders voted, rounded to ‘1 in 10 overseas Kiwi’.
